Introduction:  
Thyme is a common household spice with many medicinal uses. During the Middle Ages, Thyme was grown in monastery gardens in southern France, Spain, and Italy for use as a cough remedy, digestive aid and treatment for intestinal parasites. The active ingredient in Thyme is thymol, which comes from the oil of this herb and is used in over-the-counter mouthwash and mentholatum products because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties. 
  Used by the ancient Greeks for its aromatic properties, thyme works to relax stomach spasms and promotes healing. Thymol, or thyme oil, is used in Listerine for its antiseptic action.
